Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants (a plant that grows on or in or from land) may be grown with only their roots exposed to the mineral solution, or the roots may be supported by an inert medium, such as perlite or gravel.
Aquaculture is the breeding and harvesting of plants and animals in water. It can take place in natural water bodies such as ponds, lakes, marshland or brackish water and the ocean. It can also be conducted in man-made tanks, commonly found in fish hatcheries.
Aquaponics is essentially the combination of Hydroponics and Aquaculture. Both Hydroponics and Aquaculture have some down sides:
1. Hydroponics requires expensive nutrients to feed the plants and also requires periodic flushing of the systems which can lead to waste disposal issues.
2. Re-circulating Aquaculture needs to have excess nutrients removed from the system. Normally this means that a percentage of the water is removed, generally on a daily basis. This nutrient-rich water then needs to be disposed and replaced with clean, fresh water.
While re-circulating Hydroponics and Aquaculture are both very efficient methods of producing fish and vegetables, when we look at combining the two, these negative aspects are turned into positives.
The positive aspects of both Hydroponics and Aquaculture are retained and the negative aspects no longer exist. Also, Aquaponics can be as simple or as complex as one would like to make it! The following presentation fully depicts the various aspects of Aquaponics and responds to potentially all of the questions one may have.
